Juguang Township, consisting of the two islands of Dongju and Xiju, is southernmost point of the Matsu Islands. As the two islands resemble dogs paddling in the ocean off the mouth of China's Minjiang River, they were once known as Dongquan and Xiquan- "Eastern dog" and "Western dog"-and collectively as the Baiquan- ("white dog) Islands. They were later renamed for a quote from Chiang Kai-Shek, “Do not forget that you are on Ju,”an allusion to ancient history that referred to the intent of the ROC forces to eventually retake mainland China.
Xiju Island is home to the township government. During the Korean War (1950-1953), the American company Western Enterprises Inc. came to Xiju, bringing considerable prosperity with it; Qingfan Village even earned the nickname "Little Hong Kong," and is now Xiju's gateway to the world. Today, the only direct ferries Juguang come from Nangan, and while this makes traveling there less convenient than to other islands, it has helped the island to maintain its original appearance.
Dongju is home to the Dongquan Lighthouse and the Dapu Stone Inscription, class two and three National Historical Sites, respectively, as well as the traditional East Fujian style villages of Fuzheng and Dapu. The Matsu National Scenic Area Administration's Juguang Administrative Office is also located here.

Juguang can be reached from Nangan's Fu' ao Harbor by way of the small white ferries that travel between the two areas. The journey takes about 50-60 minutes. Another alternative is to take a helicopter from Nangan, which takes approximately 10 minutes. Helicopters only operate in the winter, and local residents are given priority.
