The Huanghuagang Uprising of Mar. 29, 1911 cost the lives of at least 72 martyrs from China’s revolutionary party, 10 of which were from Lienchiang County. On Youth Day in 1982, the head of the local military administration erected this monument to commemorate the spirit of selfless sacrifice shown by those 10 martyrs. Another purpose was to solidify the revolutionary.consciousness that was being advocated at the time. Not far below the monument is the Plum Garden, named in honor of the late President Chiang Ching-kuo’s mother. The name was written by Chiang Ching-kuo’s brother, Gen. Chiang Wei-kuo. The garden is planted in plum trees that cover the land with lovely white blossoms when the cold winds blow in.
