Nangan, formerly known as “Xiagan Tang” and “Nangan Tang, " is the largest of Matsu’s four townships and five islands, with a land area of 10.64 kilometers. It is the most developed of the islands, and the administrative, economic, transportation and military hub of Lienchiang County.

Beigan Township is approximately 30 kilometers northeast of the administrative center of Nangan, and has the second largest population and land area of the Matsu Islands. It also has the most outlying islands, including the eight islands and reefs off the Matsu Tern Conservation Area.

Dongyin Township, located at the Northeastern end of the Matsu Islands, is the northernmost territory of the Taiwan region, about 100 nautical miles northwest of Keelung on the main island of Taiwan. Comprised mainly of the two major islands of Dongyin and Xiyin, it has a total land area of 4.4 square kilometers.

Dongju is home to the Dongquan Lighthouse and the Dapu Stone Inscription, class two and three National Historical Sites, respectively, as well as the traditional East Fujian style villages of Fuzheng and Dapu. The Matsu National Scenic Area Administration's Juguang Administrative Office is also located here.
