Dongyin was once composed of two independent islets - Dongyin and Xiyin. Between the two islets, there was a reef rock - Zhongzhu Island. In high tidal hours, the rock became a lonesome reef island in the middle of the sea. In low tidal hours, people could travel to Xiyin from Dongyin through Zhongzhu Island.
In 1986, the army used the rocks left from the construction of Zhongzhu Harbor to fill the long bank along Zhongzhu Bridge, connecting Dongyin and Xiyin. Transport has since then become more convenient. It might as well be called Zhongzhu Bankway for its purposes.
