At Matsu’s Zhenge Daidan Memorial Park, a towering monument displays the powerful red characters “枕戈待旦” (Ready to Fight at Dawn). This iconic phrase was handwritten by President Chiang Kai-shek during his inspection of Matsu in 1958 and later enlarged into the current commemorative monument. As you approach Fu’ao Harbor by boat, the bold red inscription is visible from afar—marking Matsu’s military legacy.

“枕戈待旦” literally means “sleeping with your weapon, awaiting dawn,” symbolizing vigilance and readiness for battle at any moment. It reflects Matsu’s deep wartime history. Standing beneath these massive red characters is a must-do for any visitor, to feel the solemn power of its past.
