he most significant traditional folk belief event in Matsu is the annual "Baimei Season" held during the Lantern Festival. "Baimei" (擺暝), derived from the Fuzhou dialect, literally means "arranging the night" — a nighttime ritual of offering sacrifices and thanks to the deities. From the 7th day of the Lunar New Year to the 5th of the second lunar month, various deities on each island take part in Baimei ceremonies and processions to drive away evil and bless the community. Deeply rooted in Matsu’s culture, the Baimei Festival draws participation from people of all ages — even those who have moved away return to be part of the celebration.
