A Once-in-a-Lifetime Blue Tears Eco Tour

Blue Tears is one of Matsu’s most iconic natural wonders, often the first thing visitors associate with the islands—and a must-see attraction. The peak season to witness Blue Tears is from April to June. On quiet nights, glowing blue specks appear across the sea surface. These are bioluminescent dinoflagellates that emit a soft blue glow when disturbed by waves or wind. To truly see them, you need a dark, light-pollution-free environment. The phenomenon is also known as the “Blue Sea” or “Beer Blue.”

During the Blue Tears season, sightings are possible all across Matsu’s five main islands. Look for them at South Matsu’s Fu’ao Port or Tiebao, Dongju’s Fuzheng Beach or Mengao Port, Beigan’s Qiaozai or Tanghou Beach, Xiju’s Caipu’ao or Kunqiu Beach, and Dongyin’s Beihai Tunnel or Qingshui’ao.

One of the most popular experiences is the Beihai Tunnel Rowboat Tour, where visitors paddle through a pitch-black tunnel at night. Gently stirring the water causes the glowing plankton to light up—an enchanting sight straight out of a movie.
