Itinerary Overview
Due to Matsu's unique island and continental characteristics, it nurtures many unique animal and plant species. For example, the round-capped fern (*Humata tyermannii*) and black-footed fern (*Dryopteris fuscipes*) can be seen everywhere. Additionally, native endemic species that have gradually evolved due to the island's characteristics, such as the Matsu Red Spider Lily, Matsu Purple Sandalwood (*Eurya emarginata*), and Matsu Wild Lily, which are named after Matsu, bloom all over the hillsides and beaches, beautifully adorning Matsu's seasonal appearance.
Day1|Dongyin Tour: Zhongzhu Port (Dongyin) → Xiaozi'ao → En'ai Mountain → Yixiantian (One Thread of Sky) → Dongyin Island Lighthouse → Qingshuiao
Dongyin and Xiyin in Matsu are the home of the Red Spider Lily (*Lycoris radiata*). Before the veil of mystery was lifted from Matsu, they remained undiscovered. As tourism came to Dongyin, the Red Spider Lilies growing along the trails of the Dongyong Lighthouse began to attract the attention of visitors. During the blooming season in Dongyin and Xiyin, the beautiful Red Spider Lilies can be easily admired from the slopes along the line from Yixiantian to the Dongyong Lighthouse, Xiaozi'ao, En'ai Mountain, and near Qingshuiao in Xiyin. The Red Spider Lily consists of 4 to 7 small flowers with slender filaments and styles. Although the flower looks fragile, it mainly grows on windward slopes and open coastal hillsides. Flowers were recorded in China as early as the Song Dynasty. People at that time saw that the Red Spider Lily blooms without leaves, and leaves only grow after the flowers fall. Since the flowers and leaves grow from the same plant but never meet, it was called "No-Righteousness Grass" or "Heaven and Earth Ruthless Grass." Note: The entire plant is poisonous; do not consume it.

Flowers that beautify Matsu's winter landscape with wild chrysanthemums blooming all over the fields. Don't think that the small and beautiful Oil Chrysanthemum (*Chrysanthemum indicum*) only attracts people with its bright clusters of flowers; in fact, it can be picked to make tea, which helps with sleep. Another sister species very similar to the Oil Chrysanthemum is called the Leopard Plant, or Mountain Oil Chrysanthemum (*Farfugium japonicum*). Like the Oil Chrysanthemum, it has yellow flowers, but its leaves are large, thick, and beautifully shaped. Oil Chrysanthemums and Leopard Plants can be seen blooming everywhere on the islands of Matsu, dotting the granite islands with bright yellow colors in winter. The 2007 Dongju Lily Festival, organized by the Juguang Township Office and the Dongju Community Development Association, was held on the hillside with the most wild lilies next to the Dongju Fire Squad. It is hoped that this handmade lily park can preserve the most primitive growth environment of the lilies. It is worth mentioning that a *Eurya emarginata* (coast eurya), known as the "Million-Dollar Purple Sandalwood" of the Matsu Islands, grows on Lin'ao Islet in Dongju. Since Lin'ao Islet is an uninhabited island, this precious plant has been preserved. Visitors can take a boat to the island to view this "Million-Dollar Purple Sandalwood" and overlook Dongju from the top of Lin'ao Islet, offering a unique charm.

The Stunningly Beautiful Flower -- Red Spider Lily
Perhaps due to geography, the Matsu area has many species not found in Taiwan. The Red Spider Lily is a perennial herb with an elliptical underground bulb from which leaves grow in clusters. The Red Spider Lily has a characteristic where flowers and leaves do not appear at the same time; therefore, when it blooms, only the upright flower stems are seen, and no leaves can be found. The large, bright red flowers have a curled and crinkled appearance. Whether blooming as a sea of flowers or as a solitary branch, the beautiful Red Spider Lily always elicits infinite admiration from viewers. The flowering period is from July to September, and the fruiting period is from August to October.

The Red Spider Lily is a rare and protected plant in the Matsu area. During the flowering season, besides its native habitat in Dongyin, its delicate beauty can also be seen in Nangan, especially on the slopes of the Jingkuo Memorial Hall. Although the flowers are sparse, the red blossoms are even more beautiful against the green fields. The flowering period of the Red Spider Lily is about two months. Every year from August to October, the fiery red flowers can be seen on local slopes and areas with fewer trees, looking particularly striking. The local government has listed the Red Spider Lily as a rare and protected plant, and it is strictly prohibited to take it out of the area. Airports and piers have entrusted customs to enforce checks. As for the wild *Crossostephium chinense* (known locally as Haifurong), it is the most popular medicinal plant on the island. It can be seen on cliffs all year round, and its shape is beautiful even when not in bloom. Folklore says that soaking it in wine can treat rheumatism, but it should only be consumed after verification by an expert.

On the Tanghoudao Beach next to Beigan Airport, varieties of Evening Primrose left by Japanese soldiers during the Japanese occupation period can be found. Legend has it that this flower is named "Moon View" (Yuejian) because it blooms when the moon comes out. The yellow flowers represent the birth flower of February, symbolizing an uninhibited heart. Evening Primrose Oil, extracted through biochemical technology, is a great boon for women. Beautiful Matsu Beautyberry (*Callicarpa bodinieri*) blooms in Biyuan Park. It is a native plant of Matsu, blooming pink flowers in summer and producing clusters of purple fruits in winter, which are very bright and dazzling, even more eye-catching than the Oil Chrysanthemums. Interestingly, the bright purple fruits of the Matsu Beautyberry are green when they first appear and turn purple after maturing. In winter, the rural fields of Matsu are still a world of flowers despite the extremely cold weather.
