On way to Xiyin from Zhongzhu Bank, there is a pavilion with a sitting statue of former president Chiang Ching-kuo. Named Ganen Pavilion, it was built by the soldiers and civilians of Dongyin together to thank Chiang’s carrying out major construction projects on the island. The statue faces the south in a solemn position. A sign says, “amiable and devoted.” The words describes Mr. Chiang really well.
The pavilion offers a panoramic view of Dongyin and Xiyin. The surrounding sea is vast sand open. In the summer, the waves glitter. In the winter, winds are cold. It feels different in all seasons.
