Clean Coastal Waters: Matsu National Scenic Area Headquarters and Lienchiang County Environmental Resources Bureau Join Hands for a Fun Beach Cleanup, Promoting New Value for Marine Waste and Creating a New Highlight in Sustainable Tourism
In response to the Executive Yuans “Salute to the Sea” policy, which promotes marine conservation and sustainable development, Director Hung Chih-Kuang of the Matsu National Scenic Area Headquarters under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, joined hands with Director Chen Chung-Yi of the Lienchiang County Environmental Resource Bureau and Chief Lin Chih-Tung of the Nangan Township Office. Together with colleagues and local residents, they hosted a fun beach cleanup event on Saturday, April 26, at Nangan's Niujiao Beach. Themed “Clean the Sea × Embrace the Sea,” the event titled “Salute to the Sea – Love for Niujiao, Shell Whisperings” showcased strong action in marine protection despite the wind and rain.
This event invited both local residents and visiting tourists to participate. Through engaging activities like “Marine Debris Treasure Hunt” and other fun tasks, participants learned about the issue of marine litter in an interactive and relaxed way. They also collected ocean-borne waste and creatively transformed it into art materials, making “Marine Debris Shell Wreaths” that were later displayed at the Nangan Visitor Center. This initiative gave new life to ocean trash and highlighted the creative energy and environmental education value of transforming waste into something meaningful—symbolizing a tribute to the ocean and a commitment to environmental sustainability.
Director Hung Chih-Kuang of the Matsu National Scenic Area Headquarters noted that April 22 is Earth Day, a global occasion emphasizing ecological awareness and action. This beach cleanup activity was Matsu's way of joining the worldwide initiative by promoting ocean cleanliness and environmental education, while fostering a shared understanding of marine conservation among locals and visitors. Matsu boasts rich and unique coastal resources, making it a prime location for developing world-class eco-tourism. Going forward, Matsu National
Scenic Area Headquarters will continue to link local communities and integrate resources from both public and private sectors to organize sustainable, educational, and creatively engaging environmental events. The goal is to make environmental protection not just a responsibility, but also a key attraction that invites tourists to deeply experience the beauty of Matsu, ultimately building a friendly and sustainable eco-tourism environment on the islands.
