Matsu are known for the rich wartime history, distinctive Mindong-style architecture, and religious traditions. Beyond these cultural treasures, the islands are home to breathtaking coastal erosion landscapes and diverse ecosystems. To showcase Matsu’s unique charm and promote its “Island of Diversity” tourism identity, the Matsu National Scenic Area Headquarters under the Tourism Administration, MOTC, has launched the “2025 Matsu Marine Tourism” series of events. In collaboration with local tourism operators, this initiative offers immersive sea-based travel experiences, inviting visitors to discover the islands from a whole new perspective.

The official press conference was held today (June 4) at the Tourism Administration Visitor Center, marking the launch of this year’s marine tourism highlights. The 2025 campaign features activities such as “Sea Tour of Juguang”, “Sea Tour of Dongyin”, and the “Weekend Market Concert at Mabi Bay, Beigan”. Blending sea-level perspectives with island culture, the events aim to present the beauty of Matsu through its unique resources, local specialties, and surrounding tourism industries, offering visitors an entirely fresh experience of the islands.

Distinguished guests in attendance included Deputy Director-General of the Tourism Administration Huang Shih-Fang, Senior Executive Officer of Lienchiang County Government Liu Hsing-Chien, Chairman of the Lienchiang County Travel Association Yang Yao-Chih, Deputy Head of the Matsu Tourism Circle Industry Alliance Cheng Chih-Hsin, Chairperson of TASA MENG. Corporation Gu Su-Chin, General Manager of Mandarin Airlines Chang Cheng-Hao, Sales Manager of UNI Air Wu Yi-Fen, Chairman of the Taiwan Domestic Tourism Association Tsai Tzu-Chien, Chairperson of the Taiwan International Tourism Industry Development Association Lin Yu-Hua, Chairperson of the Taiwan Inbound Tourism Association Chang Shih-Yi, Chairman of the Matsu Geopark Association Chuang Shun-Fu, Associate Manager of Ever Fun Travel Service Wu Chien-Hsing, and Director of the Matsu National Scenic Area Headquarters Hung Chih-Kuang. All guests joined hands to initiate the ceremonial launch, symbolizing the official start of this year’s marine tourism season.

Running from June to July, “Sea Tour of Juguang” kicks off the series. The waters surrounding the Matsu Islands are designated as a Tern refuge, home to more than 30 species. The most remarkable among them is the Chinese Crested Tern, known as the “bird of legend” and once the subject of international ornithological excitement. Visitors joining the island-circling cruises may have the chance to observe these rare birds up close, gliding through the blue skies above the emerald sea, while also admiring world-famous natural wonders such as the Cross Sea and the spectacular reefs scattered across the waters—a truly unmatched way to explore Juguang.

Located at the northeastern tip of the Matsu archipelago, Dongyin is famed as the “northernmost frontier of the nation,” renowned for its military significance and sea-eroded coastal landscapes. From July to September, “Sea Tour of Dongyin” offers a maritime journey around Dongyin and Xiyin Islands, showcasing dramatic rock formations and flocks of terns soaring across the sky. Guided by professional interpreters, participants will gain insight into the island’s geological features, strategic military role, and abundant natural resources. The experience provides not only breathtaking views but also a deeper appreciation of Dongyin’s rich cultural and ecological heritage.

In collaboration with the Lienchiang County Transportation and Tourism Bureau and the Beigan Township Office, the Matsu National Scenic Area Headquarters will also host a family-friendly market concert at Mabi Bay. Featuring live performances by popular artists and interactive activities, the event will offer local gourmet specialties, prize games, and more. In line with the Tourism Administration’s Taiwan Summer Festival theme of “ice treats,” free servings of Matsu’s signature Old Wine Slush will be available in limited quantities—promising visitors a refreshing and unforgettable summer experience amid scenic views, delicious food, and vibrant music.

Additionally, the Beigan Township Office has curated the “Beigan Ocean Tour” experience, including activities such as the “Paddle Across Beigan & SUP”, the “Beach Seine Carnival” that recreates traditional fishing village culture, and the “Mabi Bay Weekend Market” taking place every Friday and Saturday starting June 20. This festive lineup offers the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon in Matsu.

As travel trends continue to evolve, Matsu’s slow-paced lifestyle, oceanic vistas, and dramatic coastal landscapes align perfectly with today’s demand for sustainable, local, and in-depth tourism experiences. Under the theme “The Beauty of Matsu: Uniquely Island” the Matsu National Scenic Area Headquarters presents a vibrant lineup of marine activities suited for both day and night, year-round. We warmly invite everyone to explore Matsu from new angles and discover the captivating stories of each island.
