Dongyin Garrison History Museum Reopens — Discover the Military Heritage and Culture of Taiwan’s Northern Frontier
Located on Dongyin Island in Matsu — Taiwan’s northernmost military-themed outpost among the islands of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu— the museum stands as a precious gateway into the life and legacy of Taiwan’s front-line defense. Following extensive coordination and careful planning, the museum is open to the public from April 1 to October 31, every Tuesday to Saturday. Opening hours are 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. All are welcome to explore this immersive and historical site.
According to the Matsu National Scenic Area Headquarters (Matsu-NSA), under the Tourism Administration, MOTC, the Dongyin Garrison History Museum is the premier destination for those seeking to understand Dongyin’s unique military past. It is also one of the few places in Taiwan where visitors can closely encounter the culture of a once-strategic military frontier. The museum showcases a rich collection of historical artifacts, rare photographs, military relics, and personal narratives, presenting diverse themes such as defense strategy, island life, and wartime atmosphere. Visitors will feel as if they are stepping back in time, gaining insight into the enduring legacy of this remote island.
Highlights of the collection include preserved military equipment and historical strategic maps, original manuscripts, wartime diaries, letters, and personal belongings left by former service members. These exhibits vividly portray the everyday life of the troops once stationed here. A visit to the museum powerfully evokes the tense atmosphere that once gripped the front lines, allowing visitors to witness how this resilient island withstood the trials of war and emerged transformed through the tides of history.
Through the launch of guided tour services, the Matsu-NSA hopes to establish the museum as an ideal destination for military enthusiast, history buffs, and families alike. Everyone is invited to explore this historical gem—not only to witness Dongyin’s transformation from a war-era stronghold to a symbol of peace, but also to appreciate the enduring spirit and cultural richness of Taiwan’s northernmost island.
