Preserving Hundreds of Years of Matsu History
When visiting Matsu, if you want to understand its history, experience its culture, and gain a comprehensive understanding of the region, the Folk Culture Museum is a must-visit destination! Renovated in 2024, the Matsu Folk Culture Museum is a five-story building with one basement level and four floors above ground. The building's exterior features distinctive Min-dong architectural characteristics, decorated with traditional wine jars, small windows, and "beauty back" ornamental features, elegantly showcasing the essence of Min-dong aesthetics. The museum houses numerous artifacts from Matsu's early settlers, with each floor featuring different themes, meticulously documenting every aspect of Matsu - from its historical origins and topography to daily life, language, culture, customs, and architecture.
Upon entering the museum, the first floor's Island Geography section introduces visitors to the island's bird ecology, geological landscapes, food culture, and plant distribution. It also includes a special exhibition area featuring periodic displays of local artwork. The second floor showcases the lifestyle remnants of the Liangdao people, fishing industry, and traditional Matsu architecture. The third floor is dedicated to religious culture and beliefs, introducing local deities and traditional festival activities. The Tomorrow Culture Studio displays Matsu-related story picture books and traditional board games. The top floor houses the Battlefield Island exhibition space, presenting the military and civilian life during the period of military administration. While exploring Matsu's various islands, it's worth setting aside time to visit the Folk Culture Museum - you won't be disappointed with what you discover.
