Jars of wine can be found on both ends of Tunnel 88. The granite-based tunnel is quite soothing, at 16 - 19 Celsius degrees all year round. This ensures the quality of the wine.
As a legend goes, the locals used to hide themselves up in Tunnel 88 when pirates were there. After the KMT army came to Matsu, the army expanded and fortified the tunnel vertically. Now that Matsu is no longer a military island, Tunnel 88 became a cellar where Matsu Winery stores wine. The winery’s sorghum wine, touted as Matsu’s specialty, is exactly named after the tunnel. Today, the tunnel constantly exudes the aroma of wine. You may even feel tipsy just by smelling it.
